Want to learn more about astrology?

Go to www.QuicksilverProductions.com and buy Jim Maynard’s 2009 Celestial Influences Calendar. This is the source of Skywatch as each aspect is listed day by day with the exact time. It comes in either Eastern Time Zone or Western. (I’m in the Central Time Zone and order the Eastern calendar and add an hour.) You’ll enjoy the sections explaining the planets and signs that’s included in the calendar, along with when to plant by the Moon. And you’ll read about the asteroids and Chiron, and follow them through the heavens, too.

So, you get a stellar beginners section that explains all the terms and shows you where the planets are day by day – it’s called an ephemeris. Then, as you check out your calendar every day and see the planets and aspects, you can read Skywatch and get an interpretation of those events from me. After a few months, you will begin to know the planets. A few months later, the Moon traveling through the signs will help you plant your garden, or ask for a raise. I’ve used this calendar for 20+ years and will always have a copy on my desk. This tells you where the planets are and who they are dancing with. It costs 12 bucks and it’s priceless once you know how to read it. (no, I’m not on their payroll)

Books….

“Planets in Signs” by Skye Alexander. Once you have your chart calculated and know where your planets are, this is a very good read about each planet in every sign.

“A Spiritual Approach to Astrology” by Myrna Lofthus. This is an excellent handbook which covers planets, signs, houses, aspects on and on. Lofthus believes in reincarnation and points to lessons of past lives and karma in her aspect section.

“Love and Sexuality” by Kirby and Stubbs. You have to know where your Venus and Mars are located in your chart – these are the only two planets they write about. But they will pick your pockets about what turns you on and off when you read their interpretations. And we are all different. If you want to know about how others think and feel about love and sex, get their chart out and read this book.

“Astrological Insights into Personality” by Betty Lundsted. This book explains the emotional games and what was going on in your early childhood. The section on Sun signs is the best written as it explains behaviors from youth which show up later in life. This is a psychological view of astrology – very well researched and written. Each author has his/her own perspective of astrology – none of them know it all.

You’ll find good deals on used astrology books on the web – all of these titles are current and you can pick up a used copy cheap if you look around. I’ve bought a lot of used books. There are a lot of lousy astrology books out there with misguided interpretations and negative information, too. Others are extremely complicated. Astrology is like chess: There are infinite ways to move the pieces or to draw up a birth chart.

That’s another good reason to buy used books – the study is not a quick one and there is much to know about the aspects, progressions, synastry, transits – as well as planets in houses and signs. Half of my students in the past would give up the study of astrology in complete disgust after six weeks of beginning classes with me. They thought they would know astrology at that point, but realized that it would take at least a year or two, maybe much longer, to begin to be able to read a chart with any authority or understanding. You can’t learn to play winning chess in six weeks either.

www.north-node.com. Molly Cliborne has created a tutorial on her site which will get you familiar with the glyphs, the squiggles, and what they mean – the basics of beginning astrology. It helps to see them on the screen and to create your own study cards as Molly shows you how. And where to get your own personal astrology chart created.

Yes, yes, yes. Get your natal birth chart calculated. And get charts of people you know. So, when you read about your Moon in Libra, you can then read about your partner’s Moon in Scorpio and will understand why you are so different in some ways. Reading about your children’s planets can help you direct them – you’ll understand their needs and gifts much better.

If you are a total beginner, start with Molly’s site and a calendar. You’ll be a bit confused, maybe a lot. But just keep watching the sky and your calendar with me. Every day you’ll get more acquainted with old Saturn and lovely Venus or learn something new about Pluto in Capricorn. It’s a great study that will help you understand the cycles of time and how to be in the right place at the right time.
