Lance's June Letter.....
12 May 09The town’s history is tied to a Spanish fortress, the scene of many important battles, that was built in the early 1800’s. It’s still there and a look back in time. The buildings in this town of 2,000 nearby tell you they were erected in 1899 and 1902 and still house the library, shops and a delicatessen. The town square surrounds a gorgeous court house made of limestone and finished off with turrets and a clock as if in a Dickens’s novel.
This is Texas? Yup, you have to remember that the Germans, Poles and other Europeans who settled here way back in the 1800’s brought with them a sophisticated architecture that shows up as fabulous court houses built in the middle of a town square of the county seats all across Texas. And of late, most of these little towns have realized they have a treasure that is worth restoration and preservation and are refurbishing these fabulous edifices.
In Goliad, huge live oak trees on the grounds invite you to rest and enjoy the shade and cool breeze – it’s been hot here. It was 93 yesterday, way above normal. Market Days brought me to this town, but it was all crappy stuff from 60 booths – the town was the show. I came back a different way and ending up driving through Bayside, Texas. The city limits sign said 450 souls live there – all right on the edge of the bay. Waterfront property with little houses and funky trailers on it – hippy hideouts and a way cool spot passed over by time. If you need an ocean view, I’m certain you can find a place here – vacant lots and for sale signs are up on both streets. You just have to be willing to drive 15 miles to get to a grocery store. But the view is outstanding.
Gonna fire up the grill today and do some baby back ribs and chicken. I’m taking some time off this month; it’s a great time to be out on the road with both windows down – I love driving the back roads. No wildflowers this year. It’s dry, dry, dry. And the winds have been strong – Mercury Retrograde. We bought the big Texas road map with all the country and farm roads laid out so you can see the cut-offs and usually can find another “back roads” way home – Leslie is a great navigator and map general. Just don’t take the curves too fast when she’s riding shotgun.
Neptune is on stage in the Skywatch through the Summer. He rules drugs, poisons, infections, booze and escapism, among other things. So, this flu deal may not be over as Neptune will again meet expansive Jupiter in December. Neptune also rules the movies, art, music, shoes and your feet. Jupiter brings new energy to our right brain and inspires us to use Neptune’s creative energy to write our masterpiece. Get a new pair of shoes to spark enthusiasm for something new and creative in your life. Likely the new Star Trek movie will be a big hit as both Jupiter and Neptune in Aquarius fuel our desire to see humanitarian heroes who only want all of God’s creatures and the galaxy to survive in peace. That’s gotta be some other place than where we are right now. This Jupiter Neptune conjunction does call out to all the Pisces birth signs: These two planets are your rulers. This is a very good signal to you, Pisces, to go after your dreams and make them real. The Force is with you.
Lance, you are a wonderful writer. I love to read your ‘Texan Stories’! They give me the opportunity to ‘take a trip to unknown territory’ while I’m here, in Holland where the landscape is green and flat.. no hummingbird in sight….
